Single-discipline master-degree study programme
Geography master study at the Faculty of Humanities is specialized in spatial planning. Programme has two courses: Spatial planning course and Karstology course. Both courses give students competences in the field of spatial planning. In the Spatial planning course some more emphasis is given on the themes regarding spatial planning in border and coastal regions and to special contemporary geographical processes in the Mediterranean. In the Karstology course students get acquainted with different aspects of karst environments – Slovenia is characterized by a spectacular karst environment and therefore it is known as being a cradle of karst science. The Geography study programme has been developed in the cooperation with researchers form the Karst research Institute and Geographical Research Institute “Anton Melik” of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Having completed the Master thesis, students will get the following basic competences and skills:
- Ability for complex evaluation and management of geographic processes and spatial problems, with special emphasis on understanding contemporary social changes, cultural and landscape diversity, and interconnection of locality and globalism;
- Understanding of the different aspects of spatial development;
- Understanding of the importance of following the principles of sustainable development in land use planning;
- Ability for independent research and professional work in spatial planning;
- Skill in use of geographic analytical and interpretational methods, which are the basis for spatial planning and planning of land use in particular environments;
- Critical thinking and knowledge of holistic (complex) approach for problem solving in spatial planning;
- The ability of dissemination of crucial (key) information regarding spatial planning to decision makers, not familiar with the subject of spatial planning;
- The ability of use of the acquired knowledge in practice;
- Knowledge of use of modern computer techniques (GIS) in spatial planning.
Geography master study additionally offers:
- thorough practical knowledge of modern GIS;
- good knowledge of geographical field research methods;
- practical training in work environment.
Graduates from foreign universities can enrol in Geography Master Programme at UP FHŠ under equivalent conditions to those valid for graduates from higher education institutions in Slovenia.
The Geography Master Programme additionally offers students an option to enrol parts of the study programme; each of them has 30 ECTS. Parts of the study programme that can be studied autonomously are Planning, Karstology, and Environment and sustainable development.

Master (MA) in geography
Master`s, second cycle, full-time study
Duration: 2 Years / 120 ECTS
0314 sociology and culture studies
Admission to the first year of study shall be granted to the candidates who have completed:
a) a first cycle study programme in geography;
b) a first cycle study programme in other fields of study, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying up to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle of studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
c) a four-year academic study programme or specialist study programme after completing higher professional study programme (pre-reform study programmes, adopted before 11 June 2004) in other study disciplines, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying up to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle of studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidates must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
d) a comparable education abroad and have been, in the process of recognition of their qualification and in accordance with Assessment and Recognition of Education Act, legally granted the right to continue their studies in the study programme.
In Case of Enrolment Limitation
the candidates are selected according to average grade obtained during the study programme they are transferring from. Candidates can apply for recognition of passed examinations during previous education on the basis of the submission of the subject curriculum. The decision on the recognition of examinations on the proposal of the department is made by the Senate of the Faculty or the competent Faculty Commission.
