Geography

Single-discipline undergraduate (Bachelor`s degree) study programme

About the Programme

The Geography study programme is a modern, applied and student-centered study with the longest tradition at the faculty, which is organized in the form of lectures, exercises, seminars, field exercises, independent study units – field seminars (Istria, Western and Central Europe, Slovenia with overseas and SE Europe) and practical training.

Students acquire general geographic education and insight into the development and state of geographic science. Practical knowledge in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) and thematic cartography (three subjects), field and cabinet methods of geographical research, and the experience that students gain in practice at partner institutions are important competencies of geography graduates. There is a slightly greater emphasis on content related to the sea, karst and tourism, as well as geographical problems of areas of diverse contacts (between countries, languages, cultures, etc.).

Internationally renowned researchers from the Anton Melik Institute of Geography (Ljubljana) and the Karst Research Institute (Postojna) of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts participate in the program. The program is highly optional (7 optional courses over three years), the lecturers use an e-classroom and also include research in the framework of their own projects in their teaching work.

Students are organized in the Society of Friends of Geography Koper, which is part of the European Association of Young Geographers EGEA, which enables students to participate in various domestic and international congresses, workshops, exchanges, etc. Graduates can continue their studies on the geography master’s study program, which is focused on spatial planning, or on the two-subject pedagogical master’s study program Geography – History. The geographer will find employment as an analyst, planner, cartographer or professional worker in private and public institutions, where knowledge of natural, social and spatial development problems and processes is desirable.
