The Green Heritage Project study visit in Slovenia
16/06/2025
In the frame of the Green Heritage project, the Institute and Department of Archaeology and Heritage UP FHŠ and UNESCO Chair in Heritage Interpretation and Education for Enhancing Integrated Heritage Approaches organised a study visit for project partners from Spain, Serbia, Italy and Portugal.

The GreenHeritage project aims to integrate cultural heritage, specifically at archaeological parks, with teaching young generations about sustainability. This initiative looks to fill a critical gap in current education by connecting the stewardship of cultural sites to active environmental learning. By leveraging the rich histories and material examples found in archaeological parks, GreenHeritage seeks to cultivate ecological thinking through a novel educational framework. Archaeological parks serve as both guardians of historical civilisations and living case studies in sustainability.

The study visit in Slovenia aimed to foster a transnational exchange of best practices and knowledge sharing among partners,, to enhance the capacity for environmental stewardship and heritage conservation across Europe, to facilitate learning among partners and to start building a community of practice – to share values, experiences, and best practices. On the first day, we visited the Archaeological Park San Simon in Izola and Piran and on the second day, the Mythical Park Rodik and Koper.

We focused on heritage education and interpretation, enhancing the integrated approach to natural and cultural heritage in our Archaeological Park, the educational work on BA and MA levels and presented our experience to use the Archaeological Park San Simon as a living lab for students and the community.
