About the orchestra
Founded in 1996, the Nanjing University Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra is composed of undergraduate and postgraduate students from various social science disciplines. The orchestra has a full range of instruments, including strings, recorders, wind instruments and percussion instruments, and performs mostly traditional Chinese classical music, either as a full orchestra or as solo performances by virtuosos and groups of performers.
The orchestra aims to “promote Chinese culture, especially traditional Chinese music, achieve high standards in the arts, develop quality education and showcase the achievements of successful students”. It is a well-trained and coordinated orchestra, popular with teachers, students and friends. Since its foundation, the orchestra has given almost 1 000 performances and written more than 1 000 of its own compositions in the framework of Ministry of Education projects. He has also performed at the Chinese National Music Festival and has given nearly 100 performances at universities, high schools and community venues in Jinagsu Province and further afield in China. He has also been repeatedly ranked among the top ten performers in instrumental music competitions, and has won more than 20 prizes.
The orchestra’s excellent performance of traditional Chinese music has taken it to the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Canada, Australia, Chile, Peru, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and other regions of China. As one of the top university orchestras, it has been a regular guest at various Confucius Institutes and classrooms around the world since 2009, where it has given more than 100 performances.
The concert is organised by the Confucius Classroom Koper at UP FHŠ, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute in Ljubljana.
