The event focused on the role of non-governmental organisations during disasters, violent conflicts, and other emergency situations, where—alongside humanitarian and media actors—they play an important role in protecting human rights, documenting violations, and advocating for vulnerable communities.
The introductory part of the event was led by Karmen Medica and Lia Lola V. Kotnik from the Department of Media Studies, UP FHŠ, who presented the Disaster Journalism project, the textbook, and three project guides.
The central part of the event featured the international organisation Amnesty International, with a particular focus on Amnesty International Slovenia. The organisation’s representative, Kristina Božič, spoke about Amnesty International’s work in crisis situations, the monitoring and verification of human rights violations on the ground, the challenges of the contemporary socio-political environment, and the importance of independent civil society action in protecting human dignity during times of crisis. Participants also watched a ten-minute promotional film highlighting the organisation’s active role and assistance in various global crisis hotspots.
We will continue the project soon with the next awareness-raising event.
