Anthropology

The study programme emphasizes the understanding of the web of relationships between the individual and the various components, practices, factors, structures and processes of the “culture”/cultural environment, further understanding the relationship between the “natural” and the “cultural” in man, and finally the various interpretations of the influences between the “specificities of the natural” environment and shaping its “cultural” peculiarities.
Archaeology

The programme retains the whole of inavoidable classical archaeological and historical knowledge, but connects the two in a modern, innovative way. Chronologically, it covers the periods from pre-history and ancient Mediterranean civilizations, through antiquity and the Middle Ages, to the archaeology of the recent period.
Geography

The main purpose of the doctoral study program Geography is to provide theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of geography, as well as to develop competences that provide qualifications for independent research work and the creation of new fundamental (theoretical and methodological) knowledge, new contributions to science and the ability to use these competences on the domestic and international level.
Language and Interculturality

The doctoral program Language and Interculturality is offered as an independent study program at UP FHŠ, as a joint international doctoral study program (Double PhD Degree Program) in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), or as an international study program leading to a joint degree (Joint Research PhD Thesis) in collaboration with institutions with which UP FHŠ has an agreement.
Slovene Studies
>> Slovene Studies – Doctoral degree study programme – DETAILS
The study programme follows from the need for theoretical knowledge and the need to apply linguistic and literary knowledge acquired during the past and contemporary development, the state of the Slovenian language, linguistic theories of the 20th century and the confrontation of the Slovenian language with Slavic, Romance and Germanic linguistic phenomena, together with the development of Slovenian and also world literatures from the beginnings to the present, and the literary theory.

Cofunding tuition fees in doctoral studies in the academic year 2026/2027
Co-funding tuition fees of public doctoral programs are governed by the Decree on co-financing of doctoral studies (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 22/17, 105/20 and 56/25-ZViS-1); and the Higher Education Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia No 56/25).
The University of Primorska concluded an agreement with the ministry, based on which co-financing of doctoral study fees will be made possible for all doctoral students meeting the requirements of the Decree and Criteria for the selection of candidates for co-funding tuition fees in doctoral studies at the University of Primorska.
Doctoral students who are interested in co-funding of tuition fees of doctoral programmes and are meeting the requirements from Criteria UP will have to complete the Statement on the fulfilment of the conditions for co-funding tuition fees in doctoral studies for students of the University of Primorska and submit it upon the invitation to enrol the Doctoral degree programmes at the University of Primorska. Faculties conducting doctoral study programmes will publish the Statement on their websites upon enrolment.
Tuition fees for co-funding of doctoral studies in the academic year 2026/2027 may be granted to students meeting the following requirements:
- they are enrolled in the 1st year (or higher, if enrolled according to the criteria for transferring between study programmes and conditions for accelerated advancement) of doctoral studies and the average grade of exams at the previous level of study is 8 or if they have a scientific publication. The relevance of the publication has to be approved by the Commission for Scientific Research and Development of the UP.
- they are enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of doctoral studies and so far have regularly advanced to all previous years of doctoral studies. Regular advancement to the higher year of doctoral studies is also considered in cases when the student has an extension of status for justified reasons in accordance with the Higher Education Act, the Statute of UP and in accordance with Article 49 of the Act on Intervention Measures to Contain the COVID-19 Epidemic and Mitigate its Consequences for Citizens and the Economy.
- they have not yet obtained the level of education matching the level of education obtained under third-cycle doctoral study programmes;
- their studies under doctoral degree programmes to obtain a PhD, regardless whether they have been completed, are not or have not been co-funded from public funds.
All candidates who wish to receive co-financing must fill out and submit the Statement on the fulfilment of the conditions for co-funding tuition fees in doctoral studies, at the time of enrolment to their faculty.
Students will be informed about the share of co-founded tuition fee after the Call for enrolment into the Doctoral degree programmes ends, by the end of November. The co-financing share will be the same for all doctoral students and will depend on the number of enrolled students meeting the Criteria and the funds received from the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth.
