The master‘s pedagogical study programme in Slovene studies is based on the need for theoretical knowledge and the need for the application of linguistic and literary knowledge in the field of past and contemporary development and the state of the Slovenian language, linguistic theories of the 20th century and the confrontation of the Slovenian language with Slavic, Romance and Germanic language phenomena, the development of Slovenian and world literature from its beginnings to direct contemporaneity and literary theory. After completing his studies, in addition to professional and theoretical knowledge, which are the basis for independent research work and for possible continuation of studies at the 3rd cycle, the master‘s degree also possesses all the necessary psychological, pedagogical and didactic knowledge, skills and abilities for the implementation of modern lessons of Slovene language and literature.
General pedagogical contents of the study programme are carried out in cooperation with the UP Faculty of Education.

When applying, the candidate chooses one of the modules. A candidate who chooses a double-discipline pedagogical module has to choose another double-discipline pedagogical module of one of the other faculty’s offered study programmes. It is required to meet the admission requirements for both modules.
Admission to the first year of study (both modules) shall be granted to the candidates who have completed:
a) a first cycle study programme in Slovene studies or Slovene Language and Literature;
b) a first cycle study programme in other fields of study, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations up to 60 ECTS are defined by the competent Faculty Commission based on the individual application, taking into account candidate’s previous study field. Candidate can fulfil the study obligations within the first cycle of studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams.Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
c) a four-year academic study programme or specialist study programme after completing higher professional study programme (pre-reform study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004) in other fields of study, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations up to 60 ECTS are defined by the competent Faculty Commission based on the individual application, taking into account candidate’s previous study field. Candidate can fulfil the study obligations within the first cycle of studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams.Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
d) a comparable education abroad and have been, in the process of recognition of their qualification and in accordance with Assessment and Recognition of Education Act, legally granted the right to continue their studies in the study programme.
In case of enrolment limitation the candidates are selected according to their average grade obtained in the first cycle / undergraduate studies.

The study programme will be delivered if at least 5 students are enrolled in the 1st year.
Enrolment in a higher year of study (according to the criteria for transferring between study programmes and conditions for accelerated advancement)
Transferring between study programmes is possible according to the Higher Education Act, Criteria for transferring between study programmes and other regulations of this field.
Transfer between study programmes is the enrolment in the higher year of the study programme, in case of leaving the studies in the first (initial) study programme and continuation of studies in another study programme of the same degree. The transition takes into account the comparability of the study programmes and the completed study obligations of the candidate in the initial study programme. The transition between study programmes is also enrolment of the graduate in the higher year study programme of the same degree.
Transferring between study programmes is granted to candidates, provided that the following conditions are met:
- the candidate fulfils the admission requirements for the study programme;
- the Senate of the Faculty or the competent Faculty Commission estimates that the candidate can be recognized for at least half of the ECTS points obligations from the previous study programme, which relate to the compulsory subjects of the study programme to which the candidate is transferring;
- the completion of the initial study programme which the candidate is transferring from ensures the acquisition of comparable competencies as those envisaged by the study programme.
Enrolment is also open to candidates of a comparable study programme abroad who have been, in the process of recognition of their previous studies (in accordance with Assessment and Recognition of Education Act), legally granted the right to continue their studies in the study programme.
Applications for transferring between study programmes are considered by the relevant Commission. In accordance with the Criteria for transferring between study programmes the Commission takes into account the comparability between study programmes and study obligations the candidate has completed in the previous study programme, that can be recognized in this study programme. The candidate may also be required to complete differential exams as defined by the relevant Faculty Commission.
In case of enrolment limitation the candidates are selected according to average grade obtained during the study programme they are transferring from. Candidates can apply for recognition of passed examinations during previous education on the basis of the submission of the subject curriculum. The decision on the recognition of examinations on the proposal of the department is made by the Senate of the Faculty or the competent Faculty Commission.

The goal of the study program is to develop graduates with a general Slovenistic education, meaning they acquire expert and in-depth knowledge about the development and current state of the Slovenian language, literature, and, based on that, culture. Additionally, they are trained for professional work as language editors or for work in publishing, or they are prepared to continue their studies in a pedagogical master’s program.

Competence for independent study, assessment, interpretation, and evaluation of contemporary Slovenian language and literary phenomena, as well as linguistic and literary trends in the European and global social context. - Independent use of Slovenistic and other sources:
Competence for the independent use of slovenistic and other sources and literature for theoretical and practical work in the field of Slovene studies and beyond. - Critical assessment ability:
Ability to critically assess sources and information or linguistic and literary phenomena and, in this regard, to create independent written texts (professional or popular articles, reports, discussions, etc.). - Mastery of Slovenistic discipline:
Mastery of the basic philosophy, dilemmas, and perspectives of the Slovene studies discipline, as well as Slovenistic research and interpretative methods. - Interdisciplinary approach:
Competence to explore and apply interdisciplinary knowledge from fields and study areas related to Slovene studies . - Critical assessment and problem-solving of professional and practical issues:
Competence to critically assess and solve professional and practical issues in the field of Slovenian language and cultural policy in contemporary Slovenian society and more broadly.

- In-depth insight into the Slovenian language:
Expert in-depth insight into the past and current development and state of the Slovenian language, with appropriate knowledge of 20th-century linguistic theories and the interaction of the Slovenian language with Slavic, Romance, and Germanic language phenomena. - Overview of Slovenian literature:
An overview of Slovenian literature from its beginnings to contemporary times, with appropriate knowledge of world literature and literary theory. - Knowledge of key milestones in the history of the Slovenian language and literature:
Knowledge of key milestones in the history of both the Slovenian language and literature, considering the main cultural and artistic movements in Europe and the Mediterranean. - Linguistic, literary, and other cultural peculiarities of Slovenian border and culturally contact zones:
Understanding the linguistic, literary, and other cultural peculiarities of Slovenian border and cultural contact zones, with a particular focus on the area between the Alps and the Adriatic. - Key elements of Slovenian culture:
Knowledge of some key elements of Slovenian culture from historical, geographical, and anthropological or cultural perspectives. - New research areas in linguistics and literature:
Knowledge of new research areas in linguistics and literature, particularly those emphasizing the social dimension and the connection of Slovenian literature to contemporary society. - Independent use of sources:
Competence for independently using historical, theoretical, and material sources, as well as information and communication technologies in the field of Slovene studies , specifically linguistics, literary history, and literary theory.
Graduates of the study programme will gain in-depth knowledge of both the fundamental elements of the discipline and methodological approaches and directions. Employment opportunities are also available in environments where broad knowledge and understanding of social and cultural issues, phenomena, and processes are needed, at local, national, and international levels.
Graduates will be able to work and find employment:
- As teachers/professors of Slovenian in primary and secondary schools
- As assistants in research institutions
- In public relations departments
- In cultural and tourism activities
- In the media and creative industries.
