As part of the project Disaster Journalism: Preventing the News from Turning into a Disaster (Erasmus+ EU Project, 2024–2026), led by Selçuk University in Konya (Türkiye), we are organising the second awareness-raising event for students and the general public.
When society is struck by a sudden accident, natural disaster, or state of emergency, journalists step into the spotlight, playing a crucial role in delivering timely, accurate, and verified information. Their work is essential for understanding events, guiding the population, and preventing the spread of misinformation and panic. In moments when people’s lives are turned upside down, the media act as a bridge between affected communities, emergency services, and the wider public. This awareness-raising event will highlight the role of Slovenian journalists and media – especially public service media such as the national broadcaster RTV Slovenia – in reporting during crisis situations. It will also address the challenges they face, ranging from difficult access to information and fieldwork conditions to ethical dilemmas, reporting responsibilities, and the influence of the modern digital environment. We will also discuss good practices and the importance of professional, trustworthy, and responsible journalism, which contributes to safety, a better understanding of circumstances, and quicker recovery for communities in critical times.
