Study presentation
The aim of the study program is for students to acquire adequate linguistic and communicative competence in English, knowledge of literary texts written in English, and skills in English-Slovenian translation. In terms of communicative competence, students are introduced to the various linguistic standards of the English language.
Students are taught according to the functional use of the language. They learn about the differences in linguistic rules and vocabulary across English-speaking countries such as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, Canada, etc. Additionally, students explore the use of English as an international language in both European and global institutions. This broader introduction includes understanding the linguistic norms and deviations from them.
The purpose of acquiring these knowledge and skills extends beyond basic communication. Students are trained to produce various types of texts, including business documents, and to facilitate English language communication for end-users within commercial entities or self-employed entrepreneurship contexts. Students are supported by literature content that pertains to Anglophone cultures, with a specific focus on critically evaluating British cultural policies concerning other Anglophone cultures like American, Canadian, etc.
These activities primarily aim to explore the literary and cultural nuances of Anglophone spaces. Additionally, they help students deepen their vocabulary, syntactic features, contextual reading, and comprehension skills. Ultimately, the goal is to qualify students for various roles in education, including non-formal educational settings like language schools and centres, as well as in mediation, translation, publishing, journalism, tourism, and other business environments.
In connection with the aforementioned professions, the objective is to train students in translation between English and Slovenian at a level that does not necessitate specialized skills such as interpreting or legal translation.
