Study presentation

The Language Mediation and Translation study programme is an extension of the first-level study programmes in language mediation, linguistics and the study of individual languages, as well as a continuation of the first-level social sciences and humanities programmes for students with a suitable linguistic background who wish to pursue a career in translation. In the two-year programme, students acquire the relevant linguistic and translation knowledge by studying the theoretical and methodological concepts of translation. On completion of their studies, they obtain the professional title of Master of Translation.

Students can choose between two language modules: English-French and English-Italian. The programme consists of four semesters (two academic years) and, in addition to the core subjects, students can also choose from the following subject-specific translation modules: Translation of Legal Texts, Translation of Social Sciences, Humanities and Fiction, and Translation of Business Texts. In the second year, students undertake a study placement in the field of translation.

In the course of their studies, students study in more detail the linguistic and cultural specificities of languages and the tools for modern translation and language mediation processes. They acquire skills in written and oral communication, knowledge of language, intercultural contact, translation theories and practice, and the status and activity of translation. Students learn the theories of translation as a basis for a professional approach to translation and the dilemmas it poses, the use of reference sources and tools to assist the translator in his/her work, and specific techniques and skills for information retrieval (from book and electronic sources to consultation of experts). They are able to present their professional findings in the form of publications and in international scholarly periodicals and professional works.
