As part of the project Disaster Journalism: Preventing the News from Turning into a Disaster (Erasmus+ EU Project, 2024–2026), led by Selçuk University in Konya (Türkiye), we are organising the third awareness-raising event for students and the general public.
When societies are struck by disasters, violent conflicts, or other emergency situations, non-governmental organisations often step into the spotlight alongside humanitarian services and media organisations, playing a key role in protecting human rights, documenting violations, and advocating for vulnerable communities. NGOs work where people’s suffering is most acute and where the voices of victims are often overlooked. Through their efforts, they significantly complement institutional responses and contribute to greater transparency, accountability, and the safeguarding of fundamental rights. This awareness-raising event will present the international human rights organisation Amnesty International, with a special focus on Amnesty International Slovenia. The presentation will explore how the organisation operates in crisis situations, which types of human rights violations it most frequently identifies, how it gathers and verifies information in the field, and how its campaigns influence decision-makers and the wider public. The event will also address the challenges faced by non-governmental organisations in the current social and political environment, as well as the importance of independent civil society action in protecting human dignity in times of crisis.
