International Day of Zero Waste
Published 30/03/2026
On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste.

This year’s theme focuses on food waste. Every year we discard a staggering amount of edible food, undermining food security and compromising progress towards a zero-waste, circular future. In 2022 alone, about 1 billion tonnes of food were wasted — nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers (UNEP 2026).

For this reason, students at the University of Primorska have created a post, aimed at raising public awareness about waste pollution and the importance of a sustainable transition. The material was created as part of the project Problem-based learning for students in the workplace: the economy, the non-economic and non-profit sectors in local/regional environment 2024—2027 – Words Behind the Screen, implemented at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities in collaboration with the Otok Institute, which annually organises the International Film Festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema. In 2022, Kino Otok – Isola Cinema became the first Slovenian film festival to commit to a zero-waste approach. This commitment to the zero-waste approach forms part of broader efforts to reduce the negative environmental impact of the festival’s operations.
