Lecture Abstract: The lecture will present development of popular culture in Japan and South Korea showcasing how consumerism, economy and creativity interact to output attractive products that grab attention globally. Although the surface of popular culture is shiny and beautiful, the lecture will explore some of the darker corners as well to evaluate this field more critically.
Short Biography: Assoc. Prof. Linas Didvalis has acquired his PhD from International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. At the moment he is a researcher at the Centre for Asian Studies at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania as well as Head of the Department of Culture Studies. His research interests include relations between Europe and East Asia, history of Lithuania’s ties with East Asia, as well as contemporary society in East Asian countries. As a visiting professor he taught courses in Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese and South Korean universities.
