The First International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Primorska and the Simonov Zaliv Archaeological Park have been members of the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology for several years.

In 2026, we marked the International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage for the first time.

The main event took place on 20 August 2026 in Alexandria, Egypt, where it was combined with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001). Slovenia ratified the Convention in 2007.

At the meeting held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, participants adopted the Alexandria Declaration on Underwater Archaeological Heritage – From Protection to Development. This declaration shows the global interest in protecting, researching, and promoting underwater cultural heritage.
