Department of Applied Linguistics
Study programmes
The Department of Applied Linguistics offers language programs combining English with Italian, French or Chinese. At the first level, studies are conducted within the framework of the Intercultural Language Mediation programme. At the second level, these studies continue within the framework of the Language Mediation and Translation programme. Students develop communication skills in four languages, learn about key intercultural specifics and acquire translation techniques and the ability to use translation tools. A special feature of language studies at the Faculty of Humanities is the mandatory internship abroad. Graduates are equipped with the skills to pursue careers as translators, interpreters, editors, journalists and multilingual professionals.

About the department
The department is involved in joint student projects of the Faculty, such as Humanistic days, literary evenings, creative writing, etc., and also builds on them with its own translation projects. Employees of the Department thus co-organize and actively participate together with students in a series of evenings under the common title Poetry in Translation. The Department organizes or co-organizes summer language schools, translation conferences, days of foreign cultures, e.g. Russian or Chinese, but especially closely cooperates with the Confucius classroom, which operates within the framework of the University and within which a varied series of events and adventures take place. Employees and students of the department are also active within the Kino Otok festival, they are trained in film subtitling, they are invited to the Alpe-Adria summer school, etc. At the Department, we cooperate with various institutions, e.g. with the Russian Center of Science and Culture, the Vesela Ruščina Institute, the AEISEC Institute and others.
