Study programmes

A particular feature of the study courses conducted by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies is the option of a two-course combination, which gives the students a possibility to get a degree in two specialist fields, thus enhancing their employment potential.

The interdisciplinary study course Cultural Heritage is the only study course of its kind in Slovenia, combining the fields of archaeology, history, arts history and ethnology; however, it also extends to the fields of conservation, museology and heritage management.

The two-course study programme Archaeology is a modern, internationally designed study programme, distinguished by numerous guest lecturers from Slovenia and abroad. The students are encouraged to take part in national and international research projects as well as the Leonardo da Vinci programme, the Jean Monet, Erasmus, Ceepus etc.

About the department

The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies conducts the BA, MA and PhD courses in Archaeology as well as an MA course in Heritage Studies (Heritage Tourism). Teachers of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies are active in numerous national and international research projects, conducted mostly by the Institute of Archaeology and Heritage of the Faculty of Humanities as well as other institutes. The department is involved in cooperation with several national and international partners, inviting students to participate in research projects, thus gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience.

A significant part of the studies are field trips and professional excursions organised by the department. Students will address actual problems and take part in projects related to the field of heritage and archaeology, while keeping close and genuine contact with their colleagues and professors, exchanging opinions and ideas.

Students will have the oportunity to gain hands-on experience at a very early stage, particularly through the activities of the Institute of Archaeology and Heritage; a huge institute library will be at their disposal in the Institute’s quarters in Piran and they are invited to take part in national and international meetings, archaeological excavations, and the Summer School of Museology conducted annually in Piran.

Summer School of Museology and Heritage

The main goal of the summer school is to establish communication and open discussion between museum professionals, education experts, and students. Participants have the opportunity to learn about past and current museum projects and best practices, enabling them to reflect on the significance of museums, their current role, and their relationship with society.
