The main aim of the Pedagogical Master study programme is to train graduates of the 1st cycle study programme in Italian Studies and related study programmes to perform professional work in education independently. The study programme offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of language teaching at all levels of teaching and learning. The postgraduate study programme is designed to involve individual research work by postgraduate students, focusing on theoretical and practical issues in the field of education, training and teaching.
The study programme is appropriately integrated with both the disciplines of education (parallel) and language and literature (sequential). Both contribute to the development of the profile of the Italian language teacher for the different levels of education and the related activities (counselling, monitoring and classroom management). It enables students to acquire adequate linguistic and pedagogical knowledge by studying theoretical and methodological concepts of Italian as a foreign and second language, Italian literature in the country of origin and in the world, and intercultural linguistic communication.
One of the most important objectives of this study programme is to encourage students to continue their studies up to the PhD level.

Admission to the first year of study shall be granted to the candidates who have completed:
a) a first cycle study programme in the field of Italian studies or Italian translation studies, carrying 240 ECTS credit points;
b) a first cycle study programme in the field of Italian studies or Italian translation studies, carrying 180 ECTS credit points, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle of studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams.Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
c) a first cycle study programme in other fields of study, carrying 240 ECTS, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying up to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
d) a first cycle study programme, carrying 180 ECTS credit points, in other fields of study, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. The additional courses carrying up from 10 to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidates must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme. The candidate must also complete the additional year of the study programme prior to enrolment and thus gain 60 ECTS;
e) an academic study programme (pre-reform study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004) in the field of Italian studies (or corresponding programme of study in the field of linguistics), provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying up to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. The candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme. Candidate must also be able to prove previous knowledge and competences in Italian with literature, intercultural communication and didactics of Italian language;
f) an academic study programme (pre-reform study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004) in other fields of study, provided that a candidate has completed all the study obligations relevant for further study prior to enrolment. Study obligations carrying up to 60 ECTS are defined by the relevant Faculty Commission based on documentation, provided by the candidate and taking into consideration the type of studies previously completed. Candidate can fulfil the obligations within the first cycle studies, within continuing professional development courses, or any other type of formal education and/or exams. Candidate must fulfil the obligations prior to enrolment into the master’s study programme;
g) a comparable education abroad and have been, in the process of recognition of their qualification and in accordance with Assessment and Recognition of Education Act, legally granted the right to continue their studies in the study programme.
In case of enrolment limitation the candidates are selected according to their average grade obtained in the first cycle / undergraduate studies.

The study programme will be delivered if at least 5 students are enrolled in the 1st year.
Knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and methodological concepts of Italian as a first, foreign and second language, of Italian literature in the country of origin and the world, and of intercultural linguistic communication, in addition to these, and of the fundamental areas of pedagogical work and the disciplines that underpin the pedagogical process, thus providing students with the knowledge and competences to teach Italian at the early years and subject levels in primary, secondary and adult education, as well as teaching-related competences such as counselling, monitoring and classroom management.
Direct teaching work:
- Professional and didactic competence to teach Italian at primary and secondary level and to teach adults.
- Knowledge and understanding of the developmental characteristics of pupils and students and the identification of the learning abilities and difficulties of children and adolescents.
- Applying special educational skills to work with children with special needs.
- Adapting teaching and learning approaches to the individual, social, linguistic and cultural diversity of pupils.
- Pedagogical guidance of the individual, the department and/or the group.
- Creating a stimulating learning atmosphere, interpersonal relationships and effective resolution of disciplinary problems.
Indirect teaching work:
- Working as part of a team of teachers and with other school professionals.
- Communication and cooperation with parents.
Professional work and professional development:
- Ability to present professional findings in the form of publications and in international scientific periodicals and peer-reviewed papers.
- Ability to judge and evaluate results independently and to contribute to the development of the discipline in the fields of linguistics and literary studies and their didactics.
Graduates acquire an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental elements of the discipline, as well as of methodological approaches and orientations for the teaching profession, especially in the education system, but also in other institutions involved in education (language schools, adult education, museums, tourism, etc.) They are also qualified to work in research institutions and to work as assistants in a variety of research and applied projects.
They have the potential to work in all settings where a broad perspective and knowledge of social and cultural issues, phenomena and processes is needed, at local, national and international level. The wide range of interdisciplinary subjects also qualifies them to coordinate social activities, cultural and educational institutions. They can be employed as teachers in primary and secondary schools, as teachers in institutions and companies involved in educational programmes and supplementary professional development programmes, as curator-educators in museums, as curators in cultural and tourism programmes with an emphasis on didactic content, as organisers of adult education in educational establishments, as teachers for extra-curricular education, facilitators, tourism animators, employees in national and international institutions, translators, reviewers, proofreaders.
