Department of Anthropology and Cultural Studies

Domov 5 Departments 5 Department of Anthropology and Cultural Studies

Study programmes

The study takes place in a multi-ethnic Mediterranean environment.

The programs at the 1st and 2nd level offer a unique combination of anthropology, ethnology and cultural studies in Slovenia.

Lectures, seminars and field exercises are held in smaller groups of students, which enables more flexible implementation of field exercises (even multi-day ones) and offers an individual approach and a constructive study relationship between lecturers and students.

The colleagues strive for a creative atmosphere and encourage artistic performances and research work related to the international, national and local environment.

About the department

The Department of Anthropology and Cultural Studies is the department with the longest tradition, which founded one of the first study programs at the Faculty of Humanities and represented an innovation in Slovenian higher education at the beginning of this millennium. The twin program: Cultural Studies and Anthropology connected the two original departments with programs of the same name and thus also the contents of anthropology and cultural studies, and it also covered historical anthropology and ethnology. In addition, it introduced a wide range of elective courses as the first program of higher education. The first generation of students attended the KŠA program already in the academic year 2001/02. Prominent researchers and university lecturers working in Slovenian and international institutions, state parliamentarians, tourism organizers and activists of non-governmental organizations have emerged from this generation of alumni. In the 2007/08 academic year, the department switched to a new Bologna program, and in 2014/15 it merged with the Department of Cultural Studies and since then represents a single pedagogical cell: the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Studies.

Today, it is the only higher education program in Slovenia, which (in dialogue with the theory of analytical psychology or post-Jungian studies) started with the systematic development of the modern research paradigm, i.e. more than a decade ago. based on the artistic practice of research (Arts-Based Research).
