Department of Italian Studies
About the department
The Department of Italian Studies offers programmes that are focused on Italian language, culture, the didactics of Italian language and culture, and intercultural communication at both undergraduate (1st level) and graduate (2nd level) studies.
In addition to language and cultural studies our department organize various activities, such as theatre visits, excursions to Italy, screenings of the latest Italian movies, and student exchanges with some Italian universities.
Through the Erasmus exchange program students have the opportunity to spend a semester or more at one of our partner universities in Italy.
Throughout the study, students are in direct touch with professors from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, as well as scholars from the renowned Accademia della Crusca in Florence, an institution dedicated to research on the Italian language.
Throughout their studies, students collaborate with Italian native speakers, and they learn about Italian literature, cinema, music and art.
Students at the Department of Italian Studies also get familiar with communication norms in bilingual and multilingual contexts. By applying contrastive analysis to the dialects and language varieties spoken by linguistic communities in the Slovene-Italian contact area, and using Slovene as a cultural and linguistic reference point, they develop a more detailed insight into linguistics as a scientific discipline.
Equipped with knowledge and a strong foundation in humanities research methodology, students are appropriately prepared for academic research both during and after their studies. By actively participating in self-assessment through language portfolios, students deepen the awareness of their own progress and develop the ability to critically evaluate their educational path.
Study programmes
At the undergraduate level the department offers a Bachelor’s degree (single-discipline programme) in Italian Studies. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master’s in pedagogical or non-pedagogical studies of Italian Language.
These programmes enable students to acquire appropriate knowledge of Italian language, literature, and intercultural communication. The new and updated BA programme is designed to accommodate varying levels of students’ pre-knowledge, whereas the bilingual environment and the geographical and cultural proximity to Italy further enhance the learning experience and ensure that all students can make great progress during their studies.
