Successful Workshop Explores Subtitling and Subtitle Translation
Published 29/04/2026
The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska (UP FHŠ) hosted a workshop on film subtitling and subtitle translation on 23 April 2026. The event attracted a large number of students keen to learn more about audiovisual translation.

Translators and subtitle creators Maja Lovrenov and Daša Cerar conducted the workshop. They explained that subtitles typically provide a shortened and summarised written version of speech, which must be accurately aligned with the original dialogue. Using practical examples, they highlighted the technical standards that contribute to a positive user experience, from line-length restrictions to recommended reading speed.

The main part of the workshop gave students the opportunity to practise their skills on computers using Subtitle Edit. Working with Slovenian instructions and English audiovisual content, they faced real-life translation challenges.

The workshop took place within the framework of the project Problem-based learning for students in the workplace: the economy, the non-economic and non-profit sectors in local/regional environment 2024—2027 – Words Behind the Screen. Such initiatives enable students to engage directly with the profession while gaining practical skills that are increasingly important in the labour market.
