Description:

The archaeological site of Ribnica near Brežice, the site of the Roman roadside and customs station of Romula, is of exceptional importance not only for Slovenian archaeology but also for the wider community. The site has been known since the late 1950s, when the foundations of a series of buildings and a burial ground along the former Roman road (via publica EmonaSiscia) were discovered during protective archaeological excavations before the construction of the road, connecting Ljubljana with Zagreb.

Between 2002 and 2004, the construction of the Obrežje – Krška vas motorway section led to extensive archaeological excavations, which yielded exceptional results. The area of the site was inhabited already in prehistoric times. The most extensive remains at the site date back to the Roman period. An extensive part of the settlement with remarkable architectural remains, a western necropolis and the remains of a Roman road were discovered and excavated. Individual building structures and other remains also date back to the Middle Ages and the Modern era.

The project Ribnica near Brežice – Romula, which is carried out in cooperation with ZVKDS and IAD UP FHŠ, includes post-excavation processing of the site archive, analysis and interpretation of the discovered archaeological remains, visual/graphic documentation and interpretation of the archaeological finds. The final result of the project is the publication of the primary archaeological sources in six scientific monographic publications in the AAS Collection published by the ZVKDS (https://www.zvkds.si/publikacije/zbirka-aas/).
