Dr. Wutti will expose how even though when national borders are re-drawn, ethnic and national affiliations are still demanded. In Kärnten/Koroška, on the border with Slovenia, German remained the norm—Slovenian, previously the majority language spoken in the south of this region, was now only spoken by a (segregated) minority. However, there were also ways for native Slovenian speakers to escape discrimination and segregation: linguistic assimilation. The lecture will highlight some aspects of identity and ethnicity in border regions, with a specific focus on the current border region between Slovenia and Austria.
