EthnoUP – UP FHŠ International Student Ethnographic Short Film Festival

Istria, with its rich history, the interweaving of different peoples, and its exceptional natural and, above all, cultural heritage, is an inexhaustible source of customs, traditions, and inspiring life stories that deserve to be nurtured and preserved. We believe that through film, we can save many ethnographic fragments from being lost to time. The EthnoUP Festival aspires to become a hub for the creation, presentation, and preservation of ethnographic film, as well as a space for collaboration and connection.

  • 2. EthnoUP International Ethnographic Short Film Festival

The 2. International Ethnographic Short Film Festival will take place on Friday, 20 November 2026.

  • 1. EthnoUP International Ethnographic Short Film Festival

The 1. International Ethnographic Short Film Festival took place on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, and impressed audiences with its international participation and diverse range of themes. The fifteen student films screened at the festival focused on stories of everyday life, professions and crafts, and architecture—in short, stories shaped by life itself.

  • ISTRA section

The festival primarily showcases short ethnographic films created by each year’s cohort of anthropology students at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska. Their films reflect both their perspectives on Istria’s ethnographic heritage and the everyday stories of its people. These audiovisual portrayals will be presented in the ISTRA section.

  • WORLD Section

The WORLD section invites students from around the globe who have made an ethnographic film and would like to present it to an international audience—and, above all, to us. All ethnographic filmmakers who hold student status are welcome to participate.
